What is Theory?

Now, let us look at the term ‘theory’. we often say, ‘literary theory’, Modernism, Postmodernism, etc. before going into these theories, we should understand what the word, ‘theory’ means:

A theory is a guess. It is a person’s belief, or understanding about something. for example, I believe that Life is all for enjoyment. So, we should forget our sorrows and always be happy, and go in search of happiness. This is my belief, and this is my theory about life. When it comes to money, I believe that money should be earned and should be spent. we should not save money. this is my belief and it is my theory on money. like this, I can have a theory on health, theory on food, theory on pets, etc.

Well, here is another example. if you ask me, ‘Why do birds fly?’ I will say that they fly because they should cross rivers and seas. This is my guess, and it is my theory on flying birds. If you are still not clear, ask me to explain more.

Note: Scientific theory has to be proven to become a theory. for example: Charles Darwin guest, and later believed that Man came out of monkeys. if it is not proven, then it will only be a guess, and they will not accept it in science. But general population can believe it. for example, Isha Yoga has the theory of Aadhiyogi. They believe that the first man was aadhiyogi. it is not scientifically proven so it is not accepted in science, but still people believe it as a theory. Whereas Darwin’s theory is proved, so it is a scientific theory.
