Pun in English: Playing with words!

Pun is the use of words in double meaning as a play of words that bring laughter to the reader or the listener through surprise.

For example, look at the word, ‘kidnapping’ in the sentence: “There was Kidnapping in the school yesterday; don’t worry the kid woke up”. Here the double meaning of the word ‘kidnapping’ brings you laughter: because at first we thought that someone has taken a child away from the school, but then we realize that it is kid napping which means child sleeping. Here are a few more Puns to laugh at …

1. Can February march? Well, April may.

2. My friend is a baker but he struggles to make enough dough. [Dough can mean the flour mixture to bake bread; it can also mean money]

3. I told my wife she should embrace her mistakes. She gave me a big hug.

4. The man who survived pepper spray and mustard gas is now a seasoned veteran. [Seasoned means experienced; seasoning means adding spices to food.]

5. I’m on a seafood diet. I see food and I eat it.

6. Why don’t skeletons fight each other? They don’t have the guts. [‘Guts’ means stomach; it also means courage]

7. The Math book is always worried because it has too many problems.

8. The scarecrow got an award for being an outstanding person in its field. [Scarecrows are the dummy person-like figure that stand in a field to chase away birds.]

9. I went to a peanut factory last week. It was total nuts! [Nuts also mean mad, crazy]

10. What did the ocean say to the beach? Nothing, it just waved.

Oh, the world of word play is endless, so it keeps playing on your mind.

Happy punning!

  1. Sir, this write-up is thought -provoking and a definite antidote to people suffering from memory loss and other mind-related issues. You can recommend this to Clinical phonetics and I am sure it can be beneficial to hospitals too. I tried a few puns, sir. Here they are:
    1. I spotted a spotted deer on the spot
    2. The mischievous monkey made a mound
    3. The second general seconded the command in seconds
    4. Sad Sally slipped into the Slough suddenly.
